Tesco’s core purpose is to 'Serve Britain’s shoppers a little better every day’. In Property we do that by “creating value & delivering great places to work and shop”. We work collaboratively with colleagues across our business, as well as other stakeholders, to understand how our customers’ like to shop now, and in the future. It is also of the upmost importance to us that we create a working environment, both in the office and our stores, that truly inspires colleagues to be at their best.

It is our responsibility to look after each stage of sourcing and building a store as well overseeing our estate. We manage it all - from evaluating a potential site to building the store itself; from maintaining it once it’s opened to ensuring that we provide the best offer to our customers. It’s a fast-paced, challenging job and we constantly innovate to drive the best results.

Property in Tesco is made up of the following teams;

Property Construction – Develops and delivers great places to work and shop.
Property Programme – Leads and regulates the workload of the function, working across the company to make sure we deliver the best opportunities for our customers and the business.
Acquisitions and Disposals – Acquiring profitable sites, in locations our customers require, identifying new store opportunities and creating value through the disposal of surplus sites.
Assets and Estates - Manages our portfolio of stores, operational property and investments.
Facilities – Creates and manages a great office environment and range of services for colleagues.
Group Engineering and Maintenance - Maintains great stores that serve Britain’s shoppers a little better every day.
Property Research – Uses data and insight to help inform the business in making better decisions around where to invest money, so we can deliver outstanding stores for our customers.
International Property – Combines a multitude of property expertise to support and deliver our property strategy across our international business.

Our Head Office is based in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, but some roles may include extensive domestic and/or some international travel. Welwyn Garden City is just twenty five minutes, by train, from Central London.

We have a wide range of roles within Property, which incorporate both specialist and generalist skills. Strong interpersonal attributes and the ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment is essential as you will be engaging with a broad range of stakeholders across the business.

The roles in Property are varied -  you might be assessing and improving current practices to elevate the customer experience, maintaining our portfolio, acquiring land or buildings, managing the property programme, providing cost plans, coordinating significant construction projects whilst always focusing on improving  things for our customers and colleagues and ensuring this is reflected in your decision making Supporting our local communities is also a fundamental part of the way we do things. This is integrated into the property department via projects which aim to improve green spaces and deliver water saving initiatives.

Colleagues on our current Early Careers programme have described their experience as follows:

“What I am finding really interesting is the freedom to work on real projects from the get go. I feel I am contributing from the beginning of my scheme“. (Lucas Smith, Property Research)

“There are the opportunities to move into different areas of property and work in different teams while you are here, allowing you to try out new things and find a department that you really enjoy. The atmosphere is very friendly. All colleagues are together in an open plan office and the working environment is very flexible”. (Molly Donnelly, Assets & Estates)

“For the duration of my Graduate Scheme, I can honestly say no two days were ever the same which was due to the wide variety of projects I was involved in, and the friendly and supportive atmosphere across our Tesco offices. I also had a great opportunity from Day 1 to work with a vast array of external businesses, and gain insight into many of the different facets that make up Commercial Property Surveying. The Property Leadership Team are very supportive of Graduates’ and Interns’ professional development and gave me the opportunity to have real accountability from the outset to help grow both my technical and leadership skillset”. (Anne Churchfield, Partnership Manager, Assets& Estates)

  • If Tesco was a property company, it’d be the UK’s largest by portfolio size.
  • Tesco only uses 0.7% of the UK’s electricity to operate its vast estate of over 2600 stores. Tesco has invested heavily in energy projects in the last 10 years – in the UK these now actually generate enough electricity to power Gatwick airport for a year!
  • Globally, we operate from over 6,000 stores across the globe, combined these would cover over 2,000 football pitches.
  • We don’t just build Tesco stores, we aim to support and give back to the local community by promoting mixed use schemes through which we build housing and enhance community areas. The property team have helped to regenerate a number of communities across the UK by building leisure centres, affordable housing, cinemas, bus depots, libraries, shopping centres and public spaces.
  • Retail Partnerships manage the relationship with over 25 external companies who trade within our stores, including Lottery, Arcadia, Costa express and Timpsons.
  • We have over 550 Costa Coffee machines in our estate and sold over 7,700,000 cups of coffee last year. That’s enough coffee to fill an Olympic swimming pool (and have left over for a shower!)

Please be aware, that as a candidate you can only apply for one Tesco Graduate scheme.
